Steam and the East Fife Fishing Fleet

In the late 1800's, steam fishing vessels were introduced to the East Fife Fishing Fleet. The introduction of steam heralded a great change in the local fishing industry. Fishermen who had fished from open-decked sailing 'Fifies' could now put to sea in much larger and more versatile boats than had ever been possible before.

In this sequel to his book The Lammas Drave and the Winter Herrin' (John Donald, Edinburgh, 1985), Peter Smith charts the history of the steam fishing fleet in the east of Fife; from the introduction of the steam liners in the 1890's, through the halcyon years of the herring fishing to the eventual demise of steam fishing boats in the mid 1950's.
